Abstract
The physical, mechanical, adhesive, and anticorrosive properties of a self-healing protective coating were investigated. The coating hardness was (62±2) Shore D, which corresponds to the level typical of the wear-resistant polyurethanes materials. The adhesion strength reached reached (5,0±0,2) MPa for to the glass substrate and (3,0±0,2) MPa for the steel substrate, indicating a high level of adhesion and falling within the typical range for protective coatings. The capability of the material for localized self-healing of mechanical damage under a specified thermal treatment regime was experimentally demonstrated. Corrosion resistance tests performed in a 5 wt.% NaCl solution over 8 days revealed that the coating maintains its structural integrity and effectively inhibits corrosion of the steel substrate, without the formation of defects such as cracking, delamination, erosion, or blistering. Furthermore, the potential of using the developed self-healing polyurethane composition as a thin-layer abrasion-resistant transparent protective coating for optical systems was showed.
